Knowing the price
before you sell.
ACE Trust’s Market Information System empowers smallholder farmers with timely, reliable price data, enabling informed selling decisions and improved access to structured markets.
ACE has labelled market information as the first step on the structured trade ladder. A farmer registers on the system and receives urban market prices by SMS, so they know what their crop is worth before a trader arrives at the farm gate.
ACE has learned that a price message alone is not enough. Farmers also need to understand quality and quantity requirements and the principles of collective marketing, which is why market information is paired with training and ongoing field support.
Several channels,
different literacy levels.
- Price information by SMS to registered clients.
- The 223 toll-free call centre for trade and market information.
- The Zaulimi mobile application, developed with Welthungerhilfe.
- Radio programmes and roadshows.
- Sensitisations at field days and district meetings.
- Social media and the ACE trade platform.
From an SMS pilot to
an integrated platform.
The Esoko pilot, 2011
ACE registered 250 farmers on the Esoko platform. Within two months over 70 contracts were signed — enough to justify scaling the approach.
Integration, 2014
A partnership with Avenir Technology integrated the client database with market information, the Warehouse Receipt System, and the trade platform.
Zaulimi, 2019
Built with Welthungerhilfe, the app carries extension messages as audio, video, images, and books so farmers can access information whatever their literacy level.
